About the Role
Are you passionate about animal welfare and have expertise in animal behaviour? We’re looking for a dedicated Behaviour Trainer to join our team and support RSPCA Queensland’s mission to provide the best outcomes for animals in our care.
In this role, you’ll work with staff, volunteers, and foster carers to assess, train, and rehabilitate animals with behaviour needs. You’ll also help develop training resources, provide expert guidance, and contribute to strategies that improve animal welfare outcomes. What You’ll Do
Behaviour Assessment and Training:
- Conduct and review animal behaviour assessments, providing recommendations for intervention, further review, or behaviour modification plans.
- Oversee the development and implementation of behaviour modification plans for animals in care.
- Provide training and mentorship to staff, volunteers, and foster carers in animal handling and low-stress techniques.
- Participate in shelter rounds to identify animals needing behaviour intervention.
Foster and Adopter Support:
- Assist with behaviour-related case management for foster animals, including coordinating foster placements and providing tailored support.
- Support adopters or members of the public with behaviour-related concerns and provide expert advice on managing their animals.
Resource Development and Program Support:
- Develop and deliver behaviour training materials for staff, volunteers, and the community.
- Assist with programs such as the Office Foster initiative and animal management discussions.
- Provide external training sessions for local councils and community groups as required.
Collaboration and Administration:
- Work collaboratively with Animal Care and Behaviour Teams to ensure the best outcomes for animals.
- Maintain accurate records of behaviour assessments, modification plans, and related case notes.
- Assist in aligning programs with RSPCA’s Animal Services strategic goals.
Who Are We Looking For?
Qualifications and Experience:
- Tertiary qualification in Animal Behaviour (preferred) or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in animal behaviour assessment, training, and rehabilitation.
- Experience supervising staff and volunteers in an animal care environment.

Skills and Knowledge:
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to conflict resolution.
- Familiarity with RSPCA behaviour assessment processes and a sound understanding of animal welfare standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant RSPCA software.
Personal Attributes:
- Energetic, positive, and passionate about animal welfare.
- Resilient and calm under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Physically fit to meet the demands of the role (ability to lift 10kg).
